It seems like with a little creative character design, some new animated models, and a computer or gaming console powerful enough to simulate more of the world at once, split-screen multiplayer could be a reality. Short biographies in Slimepedia could help make them feel more like part of the world. I don't think they need complex back stories though, they could just be friends or fellow ranchers who came to help. And then of course there'd have to be an explanation of why there's more than just Beatrix on the ranch! Thought would have to be put into how this would fit in with the story, and who the other "characters" would be. The other player (or players?) would probably have to have some sort of distinguishing features as well (unless Beatrix is a clone!), so there would need to be more than one player model. On the menu and in the ranch house the player can see Beatrix, so there exists a model for her, but it's probably not ready to be used as a player model, since that would require animations for all the actions in the game, like walking, running, jumping, using the jetpack, and vaccing slimes. With more than one player, there would have to be a model for the character, which isn't currently required since the game is first person and you never see yourself while playing. If two players were playing together but were in different parts of the world, the game would have to keep more of the world loaded, reducing performance. For example, right now the game unloads regions when the player isn't there, to prevent having to load the whole map at once. Of course, local multiplayer isn't a get-out-of-development-free card, and it would still have some significant hurdles to overcome to make it a reality. Since the physics and synchronization seem to be the main concerns here, and I can see why it would be difficult to get that right, perhaps split-screen multiplayer would be a viable alternative? This doesn't require any synchronization, and the physics doesn't need to change from what we have now, since everything would happen on one machine. SR is a very unconventional game and multiplayer support would require a very creative solution. the hundreds of physics-enabled slimes bouncing around on screen needing to be in sync across two or more clients is a fantastically difficult problem to solve. They then go on to mention how complicated the physics would be to keep in sync. Multiplayer is inherently more complicated and time-consuming to develop. Monomi Park took notice of this a while back and responded on their FAQ, saying that. So many in fact that the latest posts are met with "really? another request for this?" replies.
